Why don’t other countries have mandatory pool fencing?
Two weeks ago, a new major client of ours at Gurus of Glass asked why pool fencing on the Gold Coast is necessary. It led to a lively debate around the offices in which we started to learn much more about what goes on around the world. It turns out that many other countries do not have mandatory pool fencing, and here are the most common reasons as to why this is the case.
The Cold Answer
Outdoor pools are not very popular in many countries. For example, in Russia and Canada, outdoor pools are rare because the weather is often cold. Even on warm days, it can still feel uncomfortable going for a swim, and what is the point in installing an outdoor pool if it is hardly ever used. Take a country like the United Kingdom. They may have mild autumns and a mild spring, but they only get two months of actual hot weather. There are only two months in the year where an outdoor pool would be nice. Otherwise, getting in the outdoor pool is uncomfortable or even dangerous.
The Burning Answer
There are many countries where outdoor pools are not common because water is too precious. For example, take somewhere like Spain. It is far better to have an indoor pool where the water may be monitored and cared for, rather than having an outdoor pool that may well dry up. An outdoor pool is difficult to keep refilling because local reservoirs are often strained at the best of times. Even though it seems like a nice idea having outdoor pools in the middle east, or places like Africa and Egypt, the fact is that water is too precious. There are outdoor pools, but they are not nearly as common as they are in Australia.
Not Popular - Not Regulated
As this article has described, outdoor pools exist in other countries, but they are not nearly as popular as they are in Australia. As a result, there has been no need to regulate outdoor pools in a big way. It is just like how Australia has not regulated against unicycles in public parks, simply because there are not enough of them to cause an issue.
